Trust & safety

Your email is personal. Here's exactly how we treat it.

Letting any service near your inbox is a big decision. This page explains, in plain English, what Calm Mail can see, what it does with it, and how to say goodbye if it's not for you.

The short version

  • Calm Mail archives. It never deletes. Everything stays in your Gmail.
  • To decide what to tidy, it looks at who an email is from and the subject line, not the message itself.
  • When it's unsure, it keeps the email in your inbox.
  • It only ever sends email to you.
  • We don't sell your information or use it for advertising.
  • You can disconnect Gmail or delete your data yourself, anytime, from Settings.

What Calm Mail can see

When you connect Gmail, you give Calm Mail permission to work in your inbox. Here’s what it actually uses:

  • Who each email is from and its subject line, for the emails in your inbox. This is how it tells a store sale from a note from school.
  • Your replies to the daily digest, so it can follow instructions like “always archive Starbucks.”
  • Your email address, so it can send your digest to you.

Google’s permission covers more than this. Google doesn’t offer a “sender and subject only” option. But the list above is what Calm Mail uses. For more on the permission screen itself, see Before you connect Gmail.

What Calm Mail does

  • Moves clutter out of your inbox (archives it). It only tidies email that arrives after you connect Gmail, so the emails already in your inbox are left as they are.
  • Sends you one digest email a day listing what it tidied, with anything it was less sure about at the top.
  • Updates your settings when you reply, and confirms the change by email.

What Calm Mail never does

  • Delete your email.
  • Send email to anyone other than you.
  • Reply to, forward, or write emails to the people you correspond with.
  • Sell your information or use it for ads.

Archive, not delete

In Gmail, “archive” means moving an email out of your inbox without deleting it. Archived emails live in All Mail and show up in Gmail search, just like always. If you stop using Calm Mail tomorrow, every email it ever tidied is still right there.

Calm Mail is also built to be careful. Obvious clutter is archived automatically. Emails it’s only fairly sure about are archived but listed under “Worth a look” in your digest. And when it genuinely can’t tell, it leaves the email in your inbox.

Who else is involved

Calm Mail relies on a few trusted companies to work. Each only gets what it needs to do its part.

  • Composio

The secure connection to your Gmail

Composio handles the connection between Calm Mail and your Google account. That's why Google's permission screen says “Composio.” They hold the secure key that lets Calm Mail reach your inbox, and Calm Mail's requests to Gmail pass through their service. You sign in on Google's own page, so neither Calm Mail nor Composio ever sees your Google password.

  • Anthropic

The AI that helps decide what to tidy

Anthropic makes Claude, the AI assistant that looks at the sender and subject of emails our simple rules don't cover, and that reads your replies to the digest so it can follow your instructions. Anthropic's business terms say they don't use this information to train their AI.

  • Stripe

    Payments

If you add a card to keep Calm Mail after your free trial, Stripe stores it and handles the payments. Calm Mail never sees or stores your full card number, and Stripe never sees what's in your inbox.

  • Vercel and Supabase

    Where Calm Mail runs

Calm Mail's tidying and this website run on Vercel, and your Calm Mail settings, like “always keep emails from Lincoln Elementary,” are stored in a Supabase database.

How to disconnect

The quickest way: sign in, open Settings, and choose Disconnect Gmail. Calm Mail stops right away and the connection is removed on Composio’s side too.

You can also cut access from Google’s side at any time:

  1. Go to your Google account’s third-party connections page (signed in as the Gmail account you connected).
  2. Find Composio in the list and choose to remove its access.

To cancel your subscription, open Settings and choose Manage billing, or email us at hi@calmmail.app. Either way, your Gmail stays exactly as it is, and archived emails remain in All Mail.

How to delete your data

Sign in, open Settings, and choose Delete my data. That cancels any subscription right away, and removes your settings, your digest history, your Gmail connection, and your Calm Mail account. If you can’t sign in, email hi@calmmail.app from the address you connected and we’ll do it for you. This doesn’t touch your Gmail itself; your emails stay yours.

The details are in our privacy policy.
